The Mortified Denver debut was a huge success and we couldn’t have been more honored to be a part of their live show. When we heard they were bringing their antics to the Mile High City we knew we had to be involved as we are huge fans of their riotously funny podcast. If you haven’t heard of Mortified before, take a break and listen right now. We promise you won’t be disappointed!
The Mortified Denver debut at The Oriental Theater more than lived up to the hype with a lineup of awesome speakers entertaining the audience with readings from their actual middle and high school journals. If that sounds embarrassing, well, it is! But everyone is there to experience a shared cleansing by laughing through all the awkwardness. Talk about some secondhand embarrassment, though!
The Mortified podcast and live events are “hailed as a ‘cultural phenomenon’ by Newsweek and celebrated for years by the likes of This American Life, The Today Show, The Onion AV Club, & Entertainment Weekly, Mortified is a night of adults sharing their most angst-ridden childhood artifacts (journals, poems, letters, lyrics, home movies, schoolwork) as written by their original authors–in front of total strangers.”
Are you brave enough to bare your teenage soul on stage? We aren’t.
What their supporters fail to emphasize, however, is that Mortified is touching, relatable, and truly entertaining. As the different speakers share from their private journals, a feeling of camaraderie washes over the crowd. Those angsty teenage feelings of being misunderstood, of growing into one’s own skin, of unconfidently exploring interests and personas all feel so alienating at the time, but are actually universal experiences. As they say, let’s share the shame.
Hosted at one of the last remaining independent theaters in Denver, The Mortified Denver debut at The Oriental Theater was a sold-out affair! The second Denver installment is already slated for Saturday, February 11th if you’re interested in checking out round two. In the meantime, you can follow Mortified on Facebook for updates and listen to almost 80 episodes of their podcast with performances recorded across the country. Trust us: you’ll be glad you did.
Our thanks again to the Mortified crew for having us along to document all the fun! We’ll see you in February!
