Perfect Boulder Photo Spot
In this installment of our Adventure Guide, we’re focusing on the Boulder Sawhill Ponds, a loop trail located near Boulder, Colorado. This exciting location often offers up the chance to see wildlife. The convenient trail wraps around the ponds, providing many scenic spots for perfect photos! Dogs are welcome to use this trail but must be kept on a leash. Consider this location for your next family or couple’s photo session with From the Hip!
The Little Details…
The 18 ponds at Sawhill are the result of a gravel mining operation and reclamation project. Boulder Creek is located at the northwestern boundary of the ponds. This ancient floodplain laid down great quantities of sand and gravel. These deposits were mined for several decades until the early 1970s. When the mining ceased, groundwater filled the pits. The resulting wetland area provides marvelous habitat for many species of wildlife. The ponds are stocked by Colorado Parks & Wildlife, and warm water fishing is a popular activity.
Family Sessions
This location does require a small permit fee of $25 but don’t let that stop you from capturing family photos here! Boulder Sawhill Ponds boasts spacious acreage, so it’s great for both small and large families. The trail at Sawhill Ponds is particularly unique because it encircles a wetlands habitat not typically found on the dry Colorado plains. The ponds are, in fact, human-made.
This unique set of circumstances creates a setting that diverges from the traditional Colorado landscape. Yet it still highlights the distinct beauty that makes our state a photographer’s paradise.
