What makes a wedding vendor genuinely LGBTQIA+ friendly

There is a meaningful difference between a vendor who will work with you and a vendor who will celebrate you. As you build your team, look for the signals that someone has done this before and truly understands your day:

• Inclusive language on their website and in conversation. Do they say "couples" and "partners" rather than defaulting to "bride and groom"? Do their contact forms and contracts leave room for two brides, two grooms, or non-binary partners?
• Real same-sex work in their portfolio. A gallery that visibly includes LGBTQIA+ couples tells you far more than a rainbow badge in the footer. Ask to see full galleries, not just a single token image.
• A track record in the community. Has the vendor supported LGBTQIA+ organizations, advertised in queer media, or shown up beyond wedding season? Community roots are the clearest sign of genuine allyship.
• Comfort with your vision for the day. Whether you are skipping tradition entirely or reinventing it, an inclusive vendor should meet your ideas with enthusiasm, not hesitation.

When you interview potential vendors, it is completely fair to ask directly: "Have you photographed same-sex weddings before? How do you approach posing for two partners of the same gender?" The answers -- and the ease with which they are given -- will tell you everything you need to know.

The good news for Colorado couples: the vast majority of venues across the state warmly welcome LGBTQIA+ weddings. Our team has photographed at hundreds of Colorado venues, and rather than a rigid list, we find it more useful to think in terms of the kinds of settings that consistently make couples feel celebrated:

• Downtown Denver rooftops and urban spaces. Denver's LGBTQIA+ community runs deep, and downtown rooftop venues, industrial event spaces, and RiNo galleries tend to be among the most inclusive and celebratory settings in the state -- perfect for couples who want a modern, city-forward feel.
• Mountain lodges in Breckenridge, Vail, and the high country. Colorado's mountain resort towns host countless destination weddings each year and are well practiced at welcoming couples from everywhere. A ceremony in an alpine meadow outside Breckenridge is hard to beat.
• Rustic barns and ranches in Evergreen and the foothills. The foothills west of Denver are full of barn and ranch venues that pair natural beauty with a relaxed, personal atmosphere.

A practical tip: rather than asking a venue whether they "allow" same-sex weddings, ask how many they have hosted and whether they can connect you with a past couple. The enthusiasm of the answer is the real measure. If a venue's team lights up talking about the LGBTQIA+ celebrations they have hosted, you have found a good one.

Planning tips for your Colorado LGBTQ+ wedding

Every wedding is different, but a few pieces of advice come up again and again with the couples we work with:

• Book your key vendors 8 to 12 months out. Peak wedding season in Colorado runs May through October, and popular weekend dates -- especially at mountain venues -- fill quickly. Early booking gives your photographer time to scout your venue, plan your timeline, and cover every detail.
• Build the day around your story, not a template. There is no rule that says one partner walks down the aisle and the other waits. Many couples we photograph walk in together, enter from opposite sides, or process with the people who raised them. Design the moments that mean the most to you.
• Think through the getting-ready logistics early. Two partners getting ready separately, together, or with a blended wedding party changes the timeline and the photo coverage. Talk it through with your photographer so the morning feels calm, not rushed.
• Consider a first look. A private first look -- before the ceremony, away from the crowd -- gives you a quiet moment together and often produces some of the most emotional images of the day. It is entirely optional, but many couples treasure it.
• Choose vendors who make you feel safe, not just skilled. Talent matters, but so does comfort. The people documenting your day should be ones you would happily share a laugh -- or a few tears -- with.

How we have fought for marriage equality in Colorado

We have been a vocal ally of the LGBTQIA+ community since the day we founded the studio. When Colorado legalized civil unions in 2013 and, the following year, marriage equality in 2014, our team was on the ground photographing some of the very first ceremonies in the state -- work that shaped who we are and hardened our commitment to inclusive photography.

Our advocacy never stopped at the ceremony. In 2018, when Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission reached the U.S. Supreme Court, From the Hip joined the amicus brief backing same-sex couples' right to equal access under the law. We have testified at the Colorado State Capitol against bills that would have discriminated based on sexual orientation, and we have used our platform to publish op-eds in the Denver Post in support of marriage equality and LGBTQIA+ protections.

We were launch partners with Denver's Queer Business Alliance, have stood behind One Colorado's work for over a decade, and have built visible partnerships with outlets like 5280 Magazine and Out Front. For us, this commitment has never been just professional -- it is personal.
