Best photo locations at the gardens

Over years of shooting here, a handful of spaces have become our reliable go-to spots. Every couple has different taste, so we tailor the route to you on the day -- but these are the areas we point to most often:

• The Japanese Garden (Shofu-en) -- bamboo, stone, and still water make this the most serene, intimate spot on the property. Perfect for quiet, editorial portraits.
• The Romantic Gardens -- pure color and romance, with roses, arbors, and lush seasonal plantings. When everything is in bloom, the backdrop does half the work.
• The Dryland Mesa and Rock Alpine Garden -- sculptural, modern, and minimal. Great for couples who want clean lines and structure rather than lush overgrowth.
• The Woodland Mosaic -- dappled, filtered light and rich texture. This is where we chase soft, natural shade on bright days.
• The Ellipse and open lawns -- clean, uncluttered backgrounds that keep all the attention on you, and room for larger group and bridal-party photos.

Lighting and timing tips from a photographer's point of view

The single biggest factor in how your Botanic Gardens photos look is not the flowers -- it is the light. Here is how we plan around it:

Chase the edges of the day

Midday summer sun is the one thing that fights you here: it comes in hard and high, and the open garden spaces offer little cover. Whenever the timeline allows, we build portrait windows around early morning or the hour before sunset, when the light turns soft, warm, and endlessly flattering. If your ceremony lands at midday, we lean on the Woodland Mosaic and shaded plantings for open, even light on your faces.

Plan a golden-hour break

Even on a full wedding day, we love stealing the couple away for ten or fifteen minutes at golden hour. The gardens glow, the crowds thin, and those are almost always the frames couples enlarge for their walls.

Have a rain plan -- and embrace it

Denver weather turns fast. We photographed one of our favorite Botanic Gardens weddings in the rain, broke out umbrellas, and ran with it -- literally. The wet foliage went saturated and cinematic, and the couple ended up with one-of-a-kind photos they never would have gotten on a clear day. A garden venue and a photographer who welcomes weather are a powerful combination.

Seasonal considerations

The gardens are a different venue in every season, and none of them is wrong -- it comes down to the aesthetic and weather you are after.

• Spring (April-May): cherry blossoms, fresh growth, soft light, and lighter crowds. Ideal for a romantic, fresh feel before the summer foliage fills in.
• Summer (June-August): peak color and lush greenery, but also peak crowds and intense midday sun. We strongly recommend early-morning or late-afternoon portrait windows.
• Fall (September-October): warm golden light, subtle color shifts, comfortable temperatures, and thinning crowds. This is one of our favorite seasons here -- the light is exceptionally flattering.
• Winter (November-March): fewer crowds, bare branches and evergreens for structure, and moody skies. It asks for warmer clothing but rewards you with a quiet, intimate mood.

Logistics worth planning for

• Book early. Prime dates at a venue this beloved go fast -- reach out to the Gardens' events team well ahead, and lock your photography team once your date is set.
• Leave the photo permits to us. Facility rentals and vendor rules are set by the Gardens' events team, but on the photography side, we are here so often that we make sure everything our team needs to shoot your day -- permits, access, and timing -- is squared away before you arrive.
• Wear comfortable shoes. The grounds are broad and mostly level, but you will cover ground between spaces. Coordinate outfits in earth tones, pastels, or jewel tones rather than matching exactly.
• Lean on our familiarity. This is the venue we photograph most, and we know every corner of it. If you do not already have specific spots in mind, leave it to us on the day -- we will guide you to the best light and the backdrops that suit your look, no advance site visit required.
• Mind the crowds and heat in summer. Building portraits around opening hours or the end of the day keeps both out of your frames.
