Twenty-four acres of cultivated gardens in the middle of the city — and hundreds of weddings, engagements, proposals and events we have photographed here.
For colour and variety it is hard to beat the Botanic Gardens — lush plantings, water features, and tucked-away corners mean every few steps offers a fresh backdrop.
With nearly two decades of experience photographing weddings across Denver — and hundreds of weddings, engagements, proposals and events at the Gardens alone — we have learned exactly how the light moves through these gardens, which corners stay quiet on a busy Saturday, and how to turn even a surprise rain shower into some of the most romantic frames of the day.
It is an especially good choice for couples who want a polished, painterly look without driving into the mountains. Book an early weekday slot for the best light and the smallest crowds — and if you are renting a space for your wedding, your guests do not pay admission on the day.
For our team it is also personal: From the Hip Photo is an official photography partner of the Denver Botanic Gardens, and it is one of our absolute favourite places in the city to photograph a celebration.

Early morning and the last hour before closing give you soft light and the fewest people in frame. The middle of a summer Saturday is the hardest time to shoot here, and the easiest to avoid.
The Gardens have enough shelter — pergolas, the conservatory, covered walkways — that rain costs you a location rather than the day. Some of our favourite frames here were made under a clear umbrella.
Guests of a rental client come in free on the day of your event. It is a portrait or engagement session, booked separately, that carries a cost — a photography permit priced by headcount, with general admission included.
The Japanese Garden (Shofu-en). Bamboo, stone and still water make this the most serene, intimate spot on the property. Perfect for quiet, editorial frames.
The Monet Pool and the Science Pyramid. Water, reflection and a piece of modern architecture that photographs beautifully at dusk.
The Romantic Gardens. Exactly what the name suggests — the most classically pretty corner of the property.
The pergolas and living green walls. Shade, structure and depth, and a genuine option when the weather turns.
The El Pomar Waterway. Long sightlines and water down the length of the frame.
The evergreens. Where we go for golden-hour portraits when the beds are past their best.

The single biggest factor in how your Botanic Gardens photos look is not the flowers — it is the light. Here is how we plan around it:
Midday summer sun is the one thing that fights you here: it comes in hard and high, and the open garden spaces offer little cover. Whenever the timeline allows, we build portrait windows around early morning or the hour before sunset, when the light turns soft, warm, and endlessly flattering. If your ceremony lands at midday, we lean on the Woodland Mosaic and shaded plantings for open, even light on your faces.
Even on a full wedding day, we love stealing the couple away for ten or fifteen minutes at golden hour. The gardens glow, the crowds thin, and those are almost always the frames couples enlarge for their walls.
Denver weather turns fast. We photographed one of our favorite Botanic Gardens weddings in the rain, broke out umbrellas, and ran with it — literally. The wet foliage went saturated and cinematic, and the couple ended up with one-of-a-kind photos they never would have gotten on a clear day. A garden venue and a photographer who welcomes weather are a powerful combination.
If you are still assembling your team, start with our Denver wedding photographer page, and if a garden proposal or engagement session is on your mind, our Denver engagement photographer work shows how beautifully these same spaces photograph before the big day. We work with couples of every kind, and we are a proud, longtime LGBTQIA+-affirming studio.
Yes. From the Hip Photo is an official photography partner of the Denver Botanic Gardens, and it is the single venue we photograph most frequently. We also shoot the Gardens' virtual venue tours and run their Merry & Bright proposal sessions each winter. That familiarity means we already know the light, the best photo spots, and how to move a wedding day smoothly through the grounds.
Our most-used spaces are the Japanese Garden for serene, intimate portraits, the Romantic Gardens for color and romance, the Dryland Mesa and Rock Alpine Garden for a clean modern look, the Woodland Mosaic for soft shaded light, and the Ellipse and open lawns for group photos. On the day, we steer you to the corners that feel most like you.
Early morning and the hour before sunset are ideal — the light is soft and flattering and the crowds are thinner. Midday summer sun is the hardest to work with in the open spaces, so if your ceremony falls then, we lean on the shaded woodland areas and steal a short golden-hour portrait break later.
All four work, so it comes down to the look you want. Spring brings blossoms and soft light, summer delivers peak color (with the most crowds and heat), fall offers warm golden light and comfortable temperatures, and winter gives you a quiet, moody, intimate feel. Fall is a particular favorite of ours.
Your facility rental and any event fees are handled through the Gardens' own events team, and those details can change, so they are worth confirming as you book the space. On the photography side, though, you are covered — because we work at the Gardens so regularly, we make sure the permits and permissions our team needs to photograph your day are in place, so it is one less thing on your list.
We embrace it. Some of our favorite Botanic Gardens photos came from a rainy day with umbrellas — the wet foliage turns rich and cinematic, and you end up with images no clear day could give you. A garden venue plus a weather-ready team is a real advantage.
We have photographed enough at each of these to write a guide to it. If you are still comparing, these are worth a look:
Still assembling the rest of your team? We keep a list of the Denver wedding vendors we love — the caterers, florists, planners and bar teams we have worked beside on real wedding days.

As an official partner venue, this is home turf for our team — and we would love to walk the grounds with you and plan a day that feels completely yours.
