Denver
Athletic Club
A private club from 1884 with a ballroom, a billiards room and a rooftop sundeck over the skyline — and dark wood in every direction, which is a gift if you know how to light it.
An athletic club
that happens to host weddings
Most downtown venues are a ballroom with a lobby attached. The DAC is a working private club, and the parts of it that are not the ballroom are what make it worth photographing.
It was founded in 1884, which makes it older than most of the buildings around it, and it has been a fixture of downtown since Denver was still a frontier town. The club publishes twelve event rooms taking anywhere from two to five hundred people, with the Grand Ballroom and its chandelier at the top of that range and the rooftop Sundeck listed for up to four hundred.
What the room list does not tell you is the character. Dark panelled wood, brass sconces, patterned carpet, and — because it is genuinely an athletic club — a billiards room and a bowling alley sitting a floor away from where you will cut the cake. We have photographed a bride in a ballgown beside a rack of bowling shoes here, and it is the frame people remember.
It is a member-owned private club, and that word stops couples before they ask. You do not need to be a member to get married here.
Three things that shape
the day here
It is dark, and that is the point
Panelled wood and warm sconces everywhere. This is not a venue where you open a window and let daylight do the work — it wants a photographer who lights rather than hopes. Done properly it looks like a private club in a film. Done badly it looks brown. Ask to see night work before you hire anyone for this room.
The club rooms are the differentiator
Billiards, bowling, squash. Most couples book the ballroom and never think to use them, and they are the reason a DAC gallery does not look like every other downtown wedding. Ask the events team which club spaces you can access on the day, and build twenty minutes into the timeline for them.
The Sundeck is your weather variable
Everything else is indoors and reliable. The rooftop is the one part of the evening that depends on the sky, and it is also where the skyline is. We treat it as a bonus block rather than a fixed point in the timeline.
Where the frames are
The panelled rooms. Wood to the ceiling, sconces at intervals, patterned carpet underfoot. The best quiet frames in the building — first looks, bridal party, the dress before anyone is in it.
The billiards room. Green baize, dark wood, and a rack of club shoes. Nothing else downtown looks like this, and it takes five minutes.
The ballroom. The chandelier is the anchor. Worth lighting deliberately rather than leaving to the house uplights.
The entrance ironwork. Ornate metalwork against red sandstone, and the one genuinely good exterior frame that does not require walking anywhere.
The Sundeck at dusk. Skyline behind, string lights above. Fifteen minutes as the light goes is worth protecting.
Downtown, a short walk. Brick and sandstone streetscape, the light rail, and the glass around the convention centre. On a tight schedule this is the advantage a downtown venue has over acreage.
A few of the frames
Light, timing and the
practical details
Bring light, and bring it early
The interiors are beautiful and they are dark. We work with the sconces rather than blasting over them, which keeps the room looking like itself, but it means setting up before the first look rather than during it. If your photographer talks about the DAC as “available light only”, ask to see the pictures.
Use the club, not just the ballroom
Twenty minutes in the billiards room or by the lanes will do more for the variety of your gallery than another half hour of portraits outside. It is the part of the building nobody else gets to photograph, and it dates the pictures to this venue rather than to a generic downtown ballroom.
Plan the Sundeck around the sky, not the schedule
Put it in the timeline as a movable fifteen minutes rather than a fixed slot. If the evening is clear you get the skyline; if it is not, nothing downstream has to change.
Downtown means the walk is short
Everything within a couple of blocks is usable — sandstone, brick, the rail line, the glass by the convention centre. We plan a route rather than a list, and nobody has to get in a car.
Weddings at the DAC
Can you get married at the Denver Athletic Club if you are not a member?
Yes. The DAC is a member-owned private club, but it books weddings and private events for non-members through its own events team. Membership is not a prerequisite for a wedding — worth saying because the word private stops a lot of couples before they ask.
How many guests does it hold?
The club publishes twelve meeting and event rooms taking anywhere from 2 to 500 people. The Grand Ballroom is the largest, and the rooftop Sundeck is listed for up to 400. Confirm the number for your specific room with their events team, because the range covers the whole building rather than any one space.
What makes it different from a hotel ballroom?
It is an athletic club, and the building still reads like one. There is a billiards room, a bowling alley and squash courts alongside the ballroom, all finished in the same dark wood and brass. That gives a getting-ready morning and a cocktail hour somewhere to go that looks like nowhere else downtown — and it is the single best reason to shoot here.
Where are the best photographs at the DAC?
The wood-panelled rooms upstairs for anything quiet, the billiards room for personality, the ornate ironwork and red sandstone at the entrance, and the rooftop Sundeck at dusk for the skyline. The building is dark and warm inside, so we work with the sconces rather than fighting them.
Is it good for a winter wedding?
It is one of the better downtown answers. Almost everything happens indoors, the interiors are warm rather than grey, and there is no outdoor portrait window to lose. The Sundeck is the one part of the day that depends on the weather.
How far is it from the rest of downtown?
It sits at 1325 Glenarm Place, in the middle of downtown Denver, which means portrait options within a short walk — brick and sandstone streetscape, the light rail, and the modern glass around the convention centre. On a tight timeline that matters more than acreage does.
Other Colorado venues we know well
We have photographed enough at each of these to write a guide to it. If you are still comparing, these are worth a look:
- Denver Union Station — the Great Hall, and the best indoor portrait location in the city.
- Mile High Station — historic industrial downtown, and up to 1,200 guests.
- Moss Denver — industrial, indoors, and the best winter venue in the city.
- Grant-Humphreys Mansion — a 1902 Beaux-Arts colonnade minutes from downtown.
